Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24, 72 at Long Beach in California. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise as just a young girl. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, let her pursue art literature and the theater during daylight hours. DuVernay instantly became enthralled with the 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that art can be used to promote activism. Her mother was also a social consciousness and taught DuVernay to express herself through the medium of art. DuVernay, who grew up together with her parents in Compton and spent her summers at Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historical civil rights marches through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring town Selma Alabama. DuVernay visited Selma during the summers and was later in awe of the idea to film on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she received degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began producing in broadcast journalism when she was in her college. She began her career as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was told to take a look at the junk of a jury member's home. The tasks that she had to perform left her dissatisfied and, following her decision to not pursue the field of journalism, she was able to move into the industry of publicity. DuVernay started her career as a junior assistant to publicity in a tiny film studio shortly after she graduated from college. From this position she started her own public relations company named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency established several lifestyle platforms such as Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
